Our Commitment to the Environment

Green Tourism Business Scheme Blue Bay Lodges is a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). The GTBS is an accredited scheme to help tourism businesses to reduce their environmental impact, improve the management of any resources they use, such as energy and water, in order to save costs and improve efficiency. It assesses each business individually across a range of criteria relating to environmental good practice.

Marine Conservation Society Blue Bay has also co-adopted Mawgan Porth Beach in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society’s Adopt-A-Beach Scheme. The scheme aims to raise local awareness of the environmental and marine wildlife welfare implications of litter on our beaches. We are responsible for organising quarterly beach cleans with the support of local volunteers. We collect any man-made objects, such as plastic, to return the beach to its natural state and help protect marine wildlife.

Wherever possible, Blue Bay aims to lessen our impact on the environment. For example: we recycle all rubbish; we buy fair trade, organic and local products wherever we can; we use ‘hippos’ in toilet cisterns to minimise water usage when toilet is flushed and we use energy saving light bulbs where possible. Our business signage is discreet and our buildings are painted in neutral colours in order to visually blend in with the landscape.
We consider it most important that tourism works in harmony with its natural surroundings.

What Can You Do?

We can all help to reduce our impact on the environment around us. For example you can help by:

• Placing your rubbish in the appropriate bags and bins at the Blue Bay Lodges for recycling OR
• Take your own rubbish for recycling to your nearest supermarket car park
(The nearest supermarket to the Blue Bay Lodges is Morrison’s in Newquay which has recycling bins for glass bottles, plastic bottles, cans, paper and textiles)
• Minimising water usage
• Turning off electric items when not in use
• Walking rather than driving on local journeys
• Using trains and buses rather than aeroplanes
• Supporting environmentally aware businesses
